The incident occurred when the Australian official called Swann for a leg-side wide, when the Nottinghamshire man was adamant that the ball had flicked the batsman's pads en route to keeper Matt Prior's gloves.
There was even thoughts that the ball may have brushed the batsman's gloves but Harper refused to budge despite lengthy protestations by the England bowler.
Skipper Andrew Strauss had to step in to calm down his premier bowler, whose mood worsened when the dew that had formed on the grass made it almost impossible for him to grip the ball properly.
The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to using "obscene, offensive or insulting" language or gesture during a match.
England went on to lose the game against Bangladesh and now must beat the West Indies next week to ensure that they qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Defeat could still see them progress but it will be then down to other results in the group, with the defeat to Ireland now taking on an ever bigger significance for Strauss's men.
