Skipper leads Aussies to safety

Michael Clarke's superb 112 guided Australia to safety in the third Test with Sri Lanka and ensured they won the series 1-0.

The men from Down Under conceded a first-innings lead of 157 to Tillakaratne Dilshan's team but, with Phil Hughes making a century on day four, they led by 52 runs with seven wickets remaining going into the final day.
Hughes added just four more runs to his total to fall on 126 on the final day, giving the home side the early breakthrough they craved, but skipper Clarke and Mike Hussey, who scored a century in the first innings, added 176 for the fifth wicket to ensure that the match would end in a draw.

Clarke's knock contained 14 fours and three sixes, while Hussey finally fell for 93 as the Aussies were dismissed for 488.
Rangana Herath toiled away for the hosts and was rewarded with figures of 7-157, but he and his fellow Sri Lankan bowlers could not take the wickets they needed quickly enough to force victory on the final day.
There was just time for Sri Lanka to reach 7-0 before time was called and the Baggy Greens can now enjoy a series success after their humiliating Ashes reverse last winter.
