Dhoni of course came to the Indians rescue again, scoring an unbeaten 58 to tie Sri Lanka's score with both sides settling for a point in the Commonwealth Bank Series.
However, the 30th over of the innings bowled by Lasith Malinga with Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir, who struck 91, at the crease was one ball short and could have potentially been a crucial delivery.
However, Dhoni has been calm in his appraisal and has preferred not to dwell on potential ramifications.
The India skipper has accepted that genuine mistakes are sometimes made in the game and that they will not be taking the matter further.
"A dot ball could have happened," Dhoni told sportinglife.com.
"It's done and dusted. We could create a big fuss out of it, but what's the point?
"It's like a controversy that's really standing right on the edge, just about to happen. We don't really want to create a controversy out of it."
India have climbed to the top of the table with the tie but have played one more game than both Australia and Sri Lanka, who face each other next on Friday at Sydney.
